Foundational Manual Approaches to the Low Back and Pelvis Microcredential Fall 2024

This 20-hour course consists of four hours of online work along with 16 hours of hands-on instruction and assessment activities, emphasizing Osteopathic Manual Approaches to the low back and pelvis.

This course is planned as the second course in a pathway toward earning a microcredential in Osteopathic Manipulation. Learners who complete three or more courses within the series will receive the Osteopathic Manipulation “Foundations” credential. Recipients of this microcredential will have a digital badge noting their completion of didactic sessions, hands-on practice with expert guidance and feedback, and cognitive and psychomotor assessments demonstrating these skills. Each course requires a combination of online modules, in-person hands-on practice sessions, and formal assessment.

This microcredential in Osteopathic Manipulation teaches learners the basic principles and skills of Osteopathic diagnosis and treatment and provides formal assessment of minimum competency in these skills. This microcredential will be run by the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, through the Department of Family and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine.

This pathway is most appropriate for those with little or no current skill in osteopathic manipulation and is open to MDs, DOs, PTs, PAs, or students in those programs.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives:

1. Apply osteopathic screening, diagnosis, and treatment of the pelvis and lumbar regions to patients with non-specific low back pain.
2. Perform foundational clinical skills of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT).
3. Implement appropriate documentation, billing, coding, and supervision of OMT. 

Requirements

Status as a practicing D.O., M.D., physical therapist, or physician assistant - or enrollment as a student in any of these programs - is a prerequisite for participation in the course.

Successful completion of the Foundations in Osteopathic Manipulation course is a prerequisite for this second course.

The Foundation Manual Approaches To The Low Back And Pelvis workshop will be held at the UNT Health Science Center campus in Fort Worth, Texas on a Saturday and Sunday, TBA.

Attendance on both Saturday and Sunday is required.

Course Faculty:

Ryan Seals, DO Associate Professor, Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, TCOM Dr. Seals has a passion for treating patients by applying osteopathic principles and techniques. This includes treating musculoskeletal complaints, neurologic complaints such as headaches, and a variety of visceral problems such as acid reflux. He also has interests in injection therapies including prolotherapy, homeopathic injections, and neural therapy. Dr. Seals enjoys the opportunity to share his passion and knowledge with patients, medical students, and resident physicians. He is actively involved in instructing all levels of medical students and residents through lectures, hands-on labs, and other didactic activities
