Overview

 

The purpose of IPE is to prepare health profession students for interprofessional practice by teaching collaborative practice competencies within the context of interprofessional teams. All health professions now require the integration of interprofessional education into their curricula. Faculty and Preceptors must be prepared to integrate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for effective collaborative practice into the curricula of both the preclinical and clinical years of training.

Faculty and Preceptors are encouraged to participate in earning a Microcredential in Interprofessional Education. A Microcredential is a competency-based, specialized certification, a formalized way to verify, validate, and attest specific skills or competencies have been achieved through a rigorous, meaningful, and high-quality training process. Microcredential are generally more narrowly focused and offered in shorter, more flexible timespans, than traditional degrees and certificates Completion of this Microcredential will demonstrate scholarship in the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to facilitate the integration of interprofessional education into health professions curricula.

The Faculty/Preceptor Development IPE Microcredential is available through the UNTHSC Division of Academic Innovation (DAI), in partnership with the UNTHSC Department of Interprofessional Education and Practice. The program utilizes online, asynchronous and synchronous, learning.

Enrollment in this course includes access to all online digital pre-work and seven 1.5-hour live sessions conducted via Zoom. Participants must be available to attend all seven sessions in order to complete the course successfully. All sessions run from 11:30 am -1:00 pm central time. The full course is estimated to take approximately 40 hours to complete all work.

Requirements

7 – (1.5 Hour) Synchronous Online Teamwork Sessions (Active Learning Teamwork Sessions led by program faculty)

6 – (2-3 Hour) Asynchronous Online Pre-work Sessions (Module Study, Reading Assignments, Session Quizzes, Application Assignments, Reflection Essays, and Assessment Surveys done through self-study)

1 – Interprofessional Team Project to be presented at the 7th Synchronous Online Teamwork Session (Small project teams should meet at least 1 time every two weeks for project brainstorming, planning, development, and implementation and presentation planning).

2-5 – Recommended online small team meetings as needed for project planning and development.

The following textbooks are required for the program. It is the responsibility of each participant to gain access to the following textbooks:

IPE Certificate of Distinction Overview

Upon completion of the Microcredential, faculty and preceptors may earn a Certificate of Distinction, which includes the following criteria: The Certificate of Distinction is awarded to faculty and preceptors who have complete the following criteria:

  • Earned the IPE Microcredential
  • Partnered with at least one faculty member from a different profession to develop, implement, and assess outcomes of a Department of IPEP-approved interprofessional learning experience with learners of two or more professions
  • Participated in scholarship, by sharing the outcomes of their IPE at a professional conference(s) or through the publication of an educational research article.

Cynthia Carroll, MA, LPC, CPPS, PNAP is the Director for UNT Health Science Center’s (UNTHSC) Department of Interprofessional Education and Practice and an adjunct instructor in Medical Education and Professional Identity and Systems-based Practice with the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (TCOM). Cynthia has a Master’s degree in clinical/counseling psychology and a Bachelor’s degree in psychology. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor with the State of Texas, a TeamSTEPPS® Master Trainer, a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, and Certified Professional in Patient Safety. Most recently, she was inducted as a professional member with the Psychology Academy of the National Academies of Practice. Cynthia’s professional experience includes in-patient addiction rehabilitation, university student counseling, emergency department behavioral health, and health professions education. As director, Cynthia oversees interprofessional practice education and training for students, faculty, clinicians, and professionals across multiple institutions.

Emily Dos Santos, MS, earned a master’s degree in sport pedagogy and a bachelor’s degree in athletic training. She is a nationally certified and Texas state-licensed athletic trainer. Emily’s professional experience includes being the head athletic trainer in the high school setting and teaching high school science. Emily’s role within the Department of IPEP is developing and managing assessment and evaluation, data and metrics, and reporting of program outcomes. Emily is responsible for the preparation, dissemination, and publication of interprofessional practice and education data and outcomes for program assessment and accreditation records, campus communications, conferences, and academic scholarship/journals.

Richard G. Greenhill, DHA, CPHQ, HACP-CMS, PMP, FACHE is an internationally recognized healthcare quality leader and Director of the Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Management Program in the School of Health Professions at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He is Director of the Industry Advancement Technology (IAT) Accelerator at the Innovation Hub at Texas Tech University. Dr. Greenhill’s career spans more than 30 years across sectors - having honorably retired from the U.S. Navy. He was elected to life-long membership in the prestigious International Academy for Quality and Safety (IAQS), highlighting his expertise and work in healthcare quality and patient safety. He is American College of Healthcare Executives Faculty, board-certified in healthcare management, and Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE).


Dr. Greenhill has authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, textbooks, and publications to advance healthcare delivery both nationally and globally. He holds several industry certifications and credentials that highlight his commitment to professional excellence through life-long learning. His current research interests include health equity implementation frameworks, high-reliability culture for patient safety, machine learning and artificial intelligence integration into healthcare operations.

Heather Hudson, EdD, LAT, ATC, is the Director of Athletic Training Program and Clinical Associate Professor for the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation in Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences at Baylor University. 

Dr. Hudson earned her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Mars Hill College, her Master of Sport and Exercise Science from West Texas A & M University, and Doctorate of Curriculum and Instruction from Gardner-Webb University.  

Dr. Hudson is a board certified and licensed athletic training through the Board of Certification. She has been in higher education for over 20; teaching and providing patient-care at a variety of Universities.  Her current research interests lie within interprofessional education, spirituality in healthcare, psychological safety, and retention.

Karen Meadows, MSN, RN, Director of Simulation at The University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas.  

Karen has over 20 years of experience as a registered nurse, educator, and leader.   As Director of the Regional Simulation Center at UNTHSC, Karen is expanding simulation opportunities for learners across multiple academic programs and within the healthcare community.  Karen is experienced in the development and delivery of simulation education for interprofessional teams.  

She earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Eastern New Mexico University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a Master’s in Nursing Education through Walden University.  Ms. Meadows will co-facilitate Session 4.

Tracy Orwig, MSSW, LCSW, is the Director of Interprofessional Education and Associate Professor of Practice UTA.  

Tracy’s practice experience includes working in a pediatric emergency room, adult emergency room, inpatient health social work, transplant social work, rehabilitation case management, and pediatric mental health. 

Tracy teaches several of the MSW health care courses and is also involved in Interprofessional Education (IPE) activities with health professions here at UTA and with other universities in the DFW area.

José Peña, DO, is a board certified family medicine physician currently practicing full-scope family medicine in Waco, Texas. José is a faculty member of a family medicine residency where he is entrusted in the education and training of future physicians. His general professional interests are maternal-child health and addiction medicine. His additional work focus is on inpatient medicine and simulation training in medical education. When not working, José enjoys time with his wife and two daughters trying new food and spending time exploring the outdoors. 

Professional headshot of Dr. Christina Robinson

Christina Robinson, MD, has taken a leadership role in providing health care directly to children in Fort Worth’s most underserved communities. As the medical director of the new UNTHSC Pediatric Mobile Clinic, she is helping provide high-quality health care at no cost to families in a 40-foot “doctor’s office on wheels” that offers wellness visits, physicals, episodic visits, immunizations, screening, and laboratory testing. 

The overall goal of her work is to improve the health and well-being of underserved patient populations and their communities. As a clinician, she has translated the discoveries and recommendations of the scientific community into education and guidance for patients and families. However, with these endeavors, Dr. Robinson hopes to transition using her clinical perspective to investigate specific solutions for populations facing disparities and barriers to accessing healthcare. 

She has served as a preceptor for student research in epidemiology, maternal and child public health, nursing, and medicine. She has developed teams that have defined the underserved patient population of Fort Worth with community needs assessments, developed screening tools for adverse childhood experiences, initiated projects to increase vaccine compliance amongst area schools, and completed parental lifestyle medicine education programs to address obesity. 


As a native of Fort Worth, Dr. Robinson is a product of one of the neighborhoods now served by the mobile clinic. Dr. Robinson feels honored to be able to return to her hometown to contribute to solutions for a healthier community. She is the mother of one son and one daughter and wife of a loving husband who serves as Family Life Pastor for their church.
